Lower Eyelid Surgery

Puffy, baggy lower lids are caused by fat around the eyeball shifting forward over time. This usually occurs as a result of the natural aging process, heredity, or excessive rubbing of the eyes. Lower eyelid surgery is a procedure that improves the appearance of your lower eyelids by removing excess fat and skin from the area.

Am I a Candidate for Lower Eyelid Surgery?

The most common complaints associated with puffy, baggy lower lids are as follows:

  • looking tired or worn down

  • unflattering appearance

If you have these or other signs or simply want to find out more about lower eyelid surgery, call our office to schedule a FREE private consultation appointment with Dr. Hormozi.

What Is the Procedure for Lower Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Hormozi performs a unique lower lid blepharoplasty by using a transconjunctival approach. A transconjunctival blepharoplasty is performed by removing the fat from the inside of the lower lid rather than cutting through the outside skin. The transconjunctival approach eliminates the inherent risks associated with a through-the-skin approach. Most importantly, however, is that there are no scar lines, and recovery time is limited to the absorption of the bruising!

In most cases, the skin of the lower lid snaps back into place after the fat is removed. However, in some cases, excess skin needs to be removed and the lid needs to be tightened. To do this, Dr. Hormozi performs a minimally invasive surgical procedure at the outer corners of the lower lids. He measures and removes the precise amount of excess skin and carefully tightens the lid. The scar line is usually hidden at the lash line and fades away quickly. Sometimes, the cheek muscle has sagged down and creates an undesirable fold under the lower eyelids. In this case, the cheek area can be lifted at the time of lower lid surgery to give a younger look to the face (mid-facelift).

What Is the Recovery After Lower Eyelid Surgery?

Both the upper and lower lid blepharoplasties are relatively painless and are performed using local anesthesia in a private outpatient setting. Normal functions are not limited, there are no bandages placed over the eyes, and vision is not affected. Most importantly, patients are able to return to work and their normal activities within a few days following surgery!
